Do you know where your career is heading? Far too many professional enter industries without knowing exactly what they want to do in the future and as they gain experience it can be difficult to change jobs later in their career. If you have concerns about your future you might want to take some time to think about your goals and where you want to be in ten years and establish a better career path. Here are some things to think about.

Is this what you wanted to be when you grew up?

From the time we’re old enough to talk adults ask us what we want to be when we grow up. Often our answers are steeped in cultural norms or they might be what our parents did. As we grow older we start to think about jobs in terms of our long term goals. When was the last time you asked yourself what you wanted to be when you grew up? Did you take this job because it was offered or because you believed in it? Make a list of your goals and skills and see what lines up.

Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.

Do you have an idea that you think could help advance your company? Do you think you could do a management level job? Employees rarely ask for promotions when they really should and companies don’t always offer them. Do you think you have what it takes? Or is there a solution you could offer that no one has done before? Put together a proposal and talk to your boss about your goals.

Go back to school.

It is never too late to learn a new skill or enhance the skills you already have. Even while you’re working you can go back to school and gain knowledge about the job you really want. Take continuing education classes or courses online to work with your current schedule. Look into what will be most helpful for you in the future or what you really feel passionate about.

Be your own boss and treat work as an extra.

For some people, working for themselves is the ultimate goal. Kick starting a new business can be time consuming and costly, but it isn’t impossible. The market is good for small business owners now so it might be time to take that idea to the next level. For extra income, you can always work with a temporary staffing company to do short term assignments.
