Summertime is often the busiest season.

Depending on your industry, you may be swamped with work this time of year and not always have the tools you need at your disposal. If you see something heading your way, it is time to get prepared. If you’re ready to do some summer hiring to increase your production this year, here are some ways to prepare.

Get a Head Start

Waiting doesn’t serve you or your staff. Review previous years’ production to see when the busy season starts. If it begins in July and goes through October, start in June to prepare. Develop a hiring strategy, such as the next few suggestions, that can help you cope and succeed.

Bring in College Students

Summertime is the best time for college kids to make extra money before going back to school in the fall. Talk to your staff to see who has kids who want to work this summer. Reach out to local universities or tech schools to create summer working programs that can attract short-term employees.

Understand the Goals

Before you hire anyone to staff your production facility for the summer, determine the amount of work that needs to be done and how many hours and people it will take to do it. This will allow you to bring on only the staff you really need.

Create a Temporary Employee Training Program

Seasonal employees will have different needs than your permanent staff. They will need to know how to work in your company for the summer so they are prepared. If you throw them from the frying pan into the fire, you may have more problems than you anticipated. Give them a special orientation designed for them.

Partner with a Local Staffing Provider

A staffing agency is your best resource for short term or seasonal employees. They will prescreen and send you workers who have experience. And, if you do have a problem with an employee on the job, the staffing agency will be responsible for ending their employment. But you may also discover some superstars this way.
