It isn’t just the overall culture of your office that impacts your employees’ productivity. Did you know that the physical surroundings also play a major role? Everything about your office from temperature to color choice, and windows to artwork all influence how efficiently and effectively your staff works. Many of these changes are easy to make and can create a world of difference when it comes to productivity for your company. Here are some things to consider.

  • Climate control. Both too hot and too cold in the workplace can impair your employees’ ability to do their job. Of course, when it comes to climate control there are a lot of factors at play. Some employees might prefer it warm while others like it cool. However, science suggests that between 70 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit is a good temperature for most people both in the summer and the winter time. Also be cautious about humidity in the summer or lack of it in the winter.
  • Artificial versus natural lighting. People with a view of the outdoors are far more productive than those who do not. This is why many people are rejecting the cubical based workplace model and creating more open spaces. Use as much natural light as possible and keep the fluorescents to a minimum. Give people access to window spaces as much as possible.
  • The air you breathe. Air pollution doesn’t just happen in New York City or Los Angeles. Every environment has a potential for breathing hazards. There may be mold that goes undetected. Old carpet spread pollutants. Use a cleaning service to help keep the space free of contaminants. If you can, invest in an air purifying filtration system. You will see productivity rise when the air is easier to breathe.
  • Noisy distractions. Music can help people stay focused but noise can make things worse. Even having to listen to a coworker on the telephone can distract some workers from their tasks. Men are more sensitive to background noise than women. You can allow employees to use headphones to keep the distractions to a minimum. Also, if you treat the office like a library sounds can be even more distracting.
  • Overall comfort. Your staff productivity is also directly related to their individual comfort levels. Is their chair right for their posture? Is their computer at eye level? Do they have the right keyboard for good wrist health? All of these things are important components to a healthy office and happy, productive workers.
