A temporary job can be a terrific means to a full-time, “regular” position. Here are some tips on how to do so:

There are different types of temporary assignments, those that are “just” temporary and which are expected to end after a set amount of time, and “temp-to-hire” positions, for which the employer has said she’d like to hire the person who successfully fills the position. The time frame for hire usually is 90 days, but can be longer.

(A side note: don’t make the mistake of thinking a temporary position means you have no chance to turn it into a full-time position. Sometimes a company takes a look at a great temporary employee and finds some way to bring her on to its payroll. This does happen.)

You must understand that accepting a temp-to-hire position in no way guarantees that you will be hired on to the assignment company’s payroll. Things happen: the employer decides not to fill the position, the person who once had it returns, the employer decides to move someone already on her payroll into the position. Also, sometimes the employer feels you’re not a good fit. Or it’s you who decides the position or the company is not for you. That’s the beauty of a temp-to-hire position: you can try a company out just as the company is trying you.

  • To help an employer decide to hire you from a temporary position:
  • Work harder and outperform the company’s full-time employees who are doing the same/similar job as you.
  • Be upbeat and positive at all times. Show your commitment to the company and act as if you’re already a regular employee.
  • Meet as many decision makers as you can. Quietly (don’t be obnoxiously blatant about your desire to be put on the payroll) let them know your background, skills and accomplishments.
  • Even if you’re not hired, complete any projects on which you’re working as best you can. Temporary assignments result in references, just as “real” positions do.
