Writing an effective job description is key to landing and hiring the best employee to fit an open position in your company. There are several considerations to keep in mind during this process.

To start, specifics are the key. You need to touch on the highlights of the position. However, it is a delicate balancing act because you want to write a detailed description, but not too much so, so it can be tricky to do it well. These days, the focus when writing job descriptions is all on keywords. Touch on certain keywords pertinent to a particular position to pique the interest of a potential candidate.

Moreover, make it clear which skills are negotiable and which are not. You may be willing to train someone on pertinent programs, but if a candidate doesn’t have a certain level of customer service experience or sales ability you should state this upfront. This is where use of the words “required” and “willing to train on…” come in handy. Be very clear that if an applicant does not meet a base level requirement, he or she will not be considered. This not only saves the applicant from submitting,  but it also means you will to have fewer rèsumès from unqualified candidates to look through.

Make sure that your job descriptions are well-written and clean. Double check several times for spelling and grammar errors and other mistakes. Your job listing/description also is a sales piece for your company and you want to present your business in the best light.  Place a fair amount of emphasis on making sure your description has no mistake, no matter how many times you need to proof it.

In the end, writing the more effective description is about being clear about what you want and communicating that in your prose. Make sure it’s direct and clean so that you’ll attract only the best of the best in terms of potential job candidates.
