LinkedIn is one of the best resources for job seekers and professionals alike to use to build their personal networks. LinkedIn groups may be one of the most underutilized aspects of the site for most people. There are hundreds of groups for any given subject and it can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to find just the right thing. When you search for a topic in the groups section look for the ones marked “very active” in their descriptions. Once you join it is also important to participate to share your knowledge to build your community. Here are four groups for Tampa area professionals to consider.

  • Tampa Bay Business Network. This is a very active group of over 14,000 local business professionals interested in making connections in the area. It was started on LinkedIn in 2009 and is still going strong generating discussion and even facilitating local face-to-face meet ups. It also contains the subgroup “Tampa Bay Talent” where job seekers can showcase their skills for potential business leaders in the area.
  • Tampa Bay Business Journal. This private group was started by the local business publication to connect professionals to one another in the Tampa area. It was started in 2010 and because it is a closed group it won’t be overrun with advertising or spam comments. If you’re interested in all of the local business news this group is a perfect resource to meet other professionals and network within the community.
  • Networking in Tampa. For a more open group experience, join Networking in Tampa. This group is designed for locals and those interested in moving to the Tampa area to connect with one another. It was started in 2008 and is only home to just over 3,000 members but the discussions are active and informative. Members are asking the tough questions about the economy and the workplace and encouraging positive communication in the community.
  • Tampa Bay Technology Forum. If you are more interested in the tech sector, this may be a great group to get the latest news on the industry in the Tampa area. Over 7,000 members discuss topics about innovation and technology. Started in 2008, this is also a private group that can connect you to other technology professionals and potential employers throughout Tampa Bay. Their goal is to become one of the country’s top technology hubs within the next year.
