It is really easy for us to fall into negative patterns. Sometimes we even manage to talk ourselves into self-fulfilling prophecies. If you’re job search has been stalled for too long it might be time to look at some of the ways you might unconsciously be causing the problem. Here are 5 ways you might be sabotaging your own job hunt and what to do about that.

  • You’re focused too much on what you want. Businesses in the market to hire new employees are looking to see what you can bring to the table, not the other way around. They want to see what you can offer them that no other candidate can. Focus on how you can be a solution to their problem in the interview and worry about benefits if you land the offer.
  • You’re not networking enough. Some people thrive on networking. They can make new connections anywhere. However, others feel that public mingling is like pulling teeth. Networking is important to landing a job. Get to know others in your community and your industry. Attend events or even strike up conversations in public places. You never know who you can meet.
  • You’re not following up on resumes and applications. Many job seekers worry about being an imposition on others. They send off resumes or applications and wait for businesses to contact them back. Sometimes it is important to take matters into your own hands. Contact a recruiter or a hiring manager to see if they had a chance to review your resume. Be positive but not pushy.
  • You’re staying inside the box. So many job seekers back themselves into a corner. They only want a job doing just one thing or they are afraid they don’t have the right experience to apply for every opportunity. Step back and recognize that hiring is often more about attitude than aptitude. Apply for jobs that feel right even if you might be facing a learning curve. You may find exactly the right business for you this way.
  • You’re not being professional enough. If a hiring manager meets two candidates whose qualifications are identical, they need to make the decision based on some other criteria. Often this comes down to professionalism. Pay attention to how you dress, what you say, how you treat the receptionist. All of these things will be evaluated. Most importantly, keep a positive attitude. Nothing turns employers off more than negativity or an entitlement mentality.
