There are so many doorways into potential jobs today. Some organizations are still using the big job search engines while others are focusing on Craigslist and social media. As a job seeker, how do you know whether or not a job ad is real or a scam? Even if it is real it may not be a company you want to work with. There are many possible dangers when it comes to an unclear add so it is important to know what red flags to watch for.

5 of the Biggest Dangers of Unclear Job Ads (And How to Avoid Them)

  • Money based scams. Any time a job requires you to spend money up front it is not likely to be a legitimate business. Be cautious about scams that ask you to send them money for mailing materials or if they want you to wire transfer money. Never participate in this type of job.
  • Requirement of personal information. Also, never provide any personal information that could lead to identity fraud or other malicious actions. Do not provide your social security number, your banking information, or credit cards. Decline the opportunity when this is requested.
  • Large, unexpected group interviews. When you answer an ad and they invite you to an interview immediately be cautious about this experience. Often times you’ll show up along with 10 or 20 other hopeful job seekers and rather than have a job interview you’ll find yourself part of a marketing scam. It is okay to ask if the interview will be one on one before attending.
  • Inability to share the salary. Companies often say that a salary is “negotiable” but they should be able to respond to a direct question during a telephone or face to face interview. If they are unable or unwilling to discuss money with you it is okay to walk away.
  • Uncertainty of job duties. If you don’t entirely understand what the job is that you are expected to do if you get hired, you may not want to work with that organization. These may be entirely legitimate companies but this kind of disorganization can be representative of how they run their business.
