The art of a successful interview comes down to your ability to stand out from your competition in a positive way. You know that you are capable of doing the job but so does everyone else interviewing for the same position. You want to demonstrate what makes you different. Here are a few tips to making sure you stand out the right way in an interview.

Prepare.

Learn everything you can about the company before your first meeting. You want to show them that you are conscientious and want to learn more. You also want to demonstrate that you want a job with them, not just any job.

Pay Attention to Etiquette.

Start with your clothes. Make sure that you dress professionally but with a nod to the company policies. Keep accessories to a minimum and don’t wear cologne or perfume. Learn the route to the office and plan to arrive a few minutes early. Pay attention to your non-verbal communications like smiling, nervous habits, and eye contact. Always turn off your cell phone before going in to the office.

Demonstrate Potential.

The company wants to know that you have what it takes to get the job done but they also want to see that you have potential within the company. Describe your long term goals with a nod toward their organization to show that you have potential to work with them for a long time.

Strategize.

No matter what you do not every interview will be perfect. Make a strategy to ensure that you hit all the most important parts in the interview so even if the conversation doesn’t go exactly as you planned you still communicate the most important message to the interviewer.
