You may be surprised to learn that many employees recognize that they are unhappy in a new job within weeks of starting. As the manager or owner of your company it is up to you to ensure their success from the beginning. Did you know that your onboarding procedures may be the most crucial element in long term employee satisfaction? Here are several ways you can onboard your new team members to improve success rates.

Be Prepared for Them to Start.

Before the new staff member arrives on their first day make sure that they have all the tools they need to be successful. So often people have to wait for a desk or a computer. Set up their work station ahead of time, supply them with pens and paper and any other supplies necessary for them do their job.

Introduce Them to the Whole Team.

It is intimidating to be the new person in an already established group. Take some of this pressure off by introducing the new staff member to everyone in the office. This will make them feel comfortable when they do need to ask for help in their first few days.

Establish a Mentor Rather than a Trainer.

Training is one thing. It implies that a job is all about the right skills. But truly a job is about much more. You want your new staff member to know what it is like to work with the company as well as the corporate values. Assign a mentor who can teach them about their job but also about the organization as a whole.

Take them to Lunch.

Give the new person a chance to get out of the office about half way through the day. Take them out and talk to them about how the first have the day has gone. This will give you the opportunity to make adjustments along the way. Also, keep the lunch social and friendly to make them feel more comfortable.
