It is true; you do not get a second chance to make a first impression. An interview is your opportunity to make a strong first impression to an employer. Every move you make, the clothes you choose, and even the way you talk to the receptionist are being evaluated. It is your job to make a good enough first impression that you get a call back. Here are four ways your first impression might cost you the job.

The clothes you’re wearing.

Casual is becoming common in the workplace experts still advise that you dress professionally when interviewing. Pay special attention to your hygiene. Everything must be clean and neat from your fingernails to your hair. If you don’t wear a suit you can still look professional. Women should wear a tailored skirt or slacks and button down shirt. Men can skip the jacket but not the tie. Never wear excessive perfume to be respectful of possible sensitivities.

Check your attitude.

Negativity spoils a meeting. You will never get hired if you’re not a positive person. Never say bad things about previous bosses or coworkers. Don’t let desperation seep into your dialogue. Don’t talk about negative personal situations or your finances. Instead, use positivity and confidence to impress the interviewer.

Say the right things.

Don’t overuse buzzwords even if the interviewer refers to them. Instead, try to think of better ways to get your message across. Avoid phrases like “people person,” or “team player.” Multi-tasker can also be a red flag. Be genuine about your experiences, strengths, and weaknesses instead of adding these phrases to make you sound more impressive.

Don’t cross the line to arrogance.

Confidence is an impressive thing. It can demonstrate to the interviewer that you’ve done your homework and that you have the skills they need. There is a very fine line between confidence and arrogance. Don’t be too aggressive. Don’t be pushy. Don’t inflate your experience. Remain humble and polite while being proud of your accomplishments.
