You’ve probably heard corporate planners and motivational speakers mention that you need the right people in the right seats to be successful. How exactly do you build an office dream team? You need people with all the right skills, the right attitude, and the ability to work well together. You should also be sure that your team is all on the same page at the same time. While you’re making your next hiring decisions keep the all-star lineup in mind. Here are some tips you can consider when evaluating candidates for your job.

Look at why your current employees are successful.

Your current team is successful for a reason. What traits do they have in common? How do they interact with each other on a day to day basis? You need to make sure that your new hire fits in well. Once you determine what you need in a new employee you can focus your efforts. When you hire the wrong employees it won’t take long to see that they don’t fit in with the team you have in place. Allow your current employees to interview potential candidates and get their opinions as well.

Establish your company’s core values.

Your company culture is a mix of your values and mission. When you hire people who share the same values you have a winning combination. If you don’t know what those are, now is a great time create a list. Again, look to your current team to find out why people like to work for your company.

Hire for complimentary skills.

You can’t, and shouldn’t, hire cookie cutter people for your jobs. What you can do is determine what skills complement each other. Look at how your current team interacts and think about what kind of skills or personality traits are missing that would help your company be more innovative. Creative people work well with heads down workers and vice versa.

Empower your team to make decisions.

Lastly, you can’t micromanage a superstar team. This is a surefire way to cause them to become disengaged quickly. You hired them for a reason: because they are good at what they do. Now you need to empower them to make their own decisions and provide positive value to the company.
