All of your potential candidates are researching and reviewing your company online before they submit an application. If they’re not comfortable with what they see, they may avoid applying all together. Have you recently reviewed your online reputation to see if your company is desirable to potential employees? It is your responsibility to ensure that your company maintain a good public image so take some time to review your online presence and see if there are improvements you can make.

Google your company.

Do what any job seeker would do; search your company to see what comes up. Then, search your name and the names of top executives in your business. This is the only way you can see what other people have to say. You may want to read employee review websites like GlassDoor or JobVent to see what former employees are saying about their experience. Review social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Once you know what people are saying it is easier to respond.

Post positive information to push out the negative.

Once something is on the internet it is nearly impossible to make it disappear. The best thing is to counter it, or bury it, with positive information. Don’t respond to angry reviews or tweets directly. Instead, create new content that will push down the negative information in Google searches. Ask your satisfied employees and customers to write positive reviews. But don’t offer incentives because this will be a conflict of interest.

Look for violations of terms of service.

When read the review sites note their terms of service agreements. If you can demonstrate that a negative review is in violation of their terms you may be able to convince the site to remove it. The most important part of this solution is to act polite. It is not the review site’s responsibility to improve your reputation. Don’t act entitled to a resolution. Use the proper channels and see what they can do for you.

Create your own online brand.

You probably have a website. Have you reviewed it or updated it recently. Make sure it is dynamic and has good content. Make sure your company is represented on social media as well. Create Facebook and LinkedIn pages for your organization and update them regularly. There may be someone in your office who excels at social media and would love the opportunity to manage it for you.
