Whatever your ultimate career goals are it can be helpful to have a sounding board to help you determine the answers to some of the hardest questions. A mentor is a person who has been where you are and is where you want to be. They are contain a mind of knowledge that can’t be replicated by studying, reading, or Googling.

Establish a Mentor Relationship to Benefit Your Career

  1. Networking Skills.
While networking is scary it can be very rewarding. You may not know too many people in your field but you can meet them if you look in the right places. Build your networking skills to help you gain access to professionals in your field and make appropriate contacts. Learning how to talk to different people throughout your career can only benefit you.
  2. Hands on experience.
A mentor has done what you want to do so don’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to your career. While you’ll want to add your own spin and personality into your work, you can use their experience to help guide you to where you want to be. They will be happy to share their stories to give you a heads up with challenges as well as benefits.
  3. Get you unstuck.
It is easy to get stuck in a rut when you’re working your way to a specific goal. A mentor is someone you can talk to when you feel this way. They have absolutely felt the same way and can tell you how they got themselves unstuck and moving again. Successful people embrace failure but you can help mitigate damage to your career by learning how someone else recovered.
  4. Accountability and action.
When you’re accountable to other people you are much more likely to finish what you’ve started. Your mentor can become part of your accountability network so you always feel compelled to take action and not let anyone down. Accountability relationships tend to be reciprocal.
  5. Pay it forward.
Speaking of reciprocal, when you’ve been working with a mentor don’t be afraid to pay it forward. Others might look at what you’re doing now and wondering how to get started themselves. Always be open to mentor relationships yourself so you can pass on the knowledge you’ve gained.
