As a job seeker you owe it to yourself to use all the possible tools that are available.

You have a resume, you’ve written cover letters, and you send thank you notes along the way. But, what if there are aspects that you’re missing? Could Twitter be the extra push you need to get you in front of potential employers and help you land the job you’ve been looking for? Here are some of the ways you can use twitter for your job search.

Create a Killer Bio

You have a few characters to tell the world who you are and what you want so make the best use of this space. Create a bio that will attract the right companies to you profile and make them want more. Start with what you do in two to three words. Add what you’re looking for and where you want to work. Finish with a great way to contact you. So, for less than 160 characters, write something like, “Dedicated Administrative Professional seeking Technology-oriented Opportunity in Tampa.”

Find and Engage with Mentors

The next step is to follow the right people. But don’t just follow them, engage with them. Look at individuals who do what it is that you want to do with your career. Read their tweets. Share their tweets. Respond to their tweets. This will help build your audience as well but give you good insight on your career path along the way.

Join Twitter Chats

Have you ever been part of a live tweet experience? This is where a group of people will have a discussion, each post at 140 characters or less, with in a specific period of time. Professional groups do them often so follow companies that offer chats and participate. Be sure to include the appropriate hashtag for the conversation in each post.

Follow Target Companies

Lastly, you want to make sure that you are following the very companies that you want to work with. This will give you inside information on the organization, news about the company in real time, and even potential job opportunities before other people see them.
