A bad hire is never something a manager wants to have to deal with on the job.

But, when do you decide to pull the plug? What if there was another option?

If the employee isn’t quite getting the job done that they were hired for, maybe you can reassign them to utilize their skills differently.

3 Options to Consider Before Terminating an Employee

Review Their Training

It is quite possible that when someone isn’t working out to your expectations there was a missing piece in their training. Go back and review your procedures and see if there are some additions or improvements that you can make to help give new hires the keys to success. Then revisit these with the employee who isn’t getting the job done to see if they help the situation.

Talk to The Employee

Before you give up on someone completely, you need to talk to them to find out exactly where the disconnect is. Do they feel they are doing things correctly? Are they frustrated? Are they confused about something that should have been made clear from the start? Communications will be an effective tool to solving the problem before you let someone go.

Find Out Their Strengths

Even though they presented themselves as an expert in the interview, maybe the fall just short of where you expected them to be in terms of productivity or skills. If so, revisit who they really are. What are their actual strengths? What do they like to do? Is there another place in the office that would be better suited for them?

When All Else Fails…Make a change

Make termination the last resort. If you’ve gone back and retrained them. Talked to them about your expectations and given them warnings to improve their performance, and transitioned them into a position that felt like a better fit but they’re still not quit getting it, now is the time to make a change. Never make the termination personal, just express that they aren’t meeting your expectations on the job and have been given plenty of opportunities to improve. Wish them luck in their next venture.
