Far too many people believe that the best way to be taken seriously on the job is to become indispensable. While it can feel good to always be needed, it is a double-edged sword. If you make yourself too indispensable, you can be taken advantage of on a regular basis. Instead, be knowledgeable and provide solutions even when those solutions suggest that someone else will be better at handling a particular task.

Know You’re Being Evaluated

Everything you do on the job is a test, and you should treat it that way. Companies don’t just focus on the end results, they are also looking at the way to perform a task. Whenever you start a project, know that every aspect is being evaluated by your managers. If you decide to go off-script, that’s fine but be able to justify the change of course.

Be Helpful, Not Arrogant

Lastly, you have skills and experience that not everyone shares in your office, so feel free to use those skills to be in the service of others. However, there is a very fine line with being helpful and being arrogant about your abilities. Just because you’re the only one that knows how to do a particular thing doesn’t mean you can act arrogant while you’re doing it.
