Pre-interview jitters are certainly not unusual but they are conquerable. When you’re facing your next interview situation consider the ways you can be confident and professional and wow the interviewer. The calmer, cooler, and more collected you are the more the interviewer will see your value for their company. Here are the three things you should focus on to keep the interview running smoothly and break through those nerves.
- Be in control of your thoughts. Your inner voice can say a lot of things before an interview and not all of them are true. If you are in your head too much through the process you may find that your negative thoughts are affecting your interviewing abilities. Your attitude and emotions play a big part in your pre-interview anxiety so do what you can to curb them. Think positively. Before the interview spend some quiet time thinking about your best attributes. If a negative though invades simply brush it aside. When you arrive at the interview be sure to focus on positive things and don’t speak negatively about yourself or your previous employers. Your positive attitude will go a long way to impress the interviewer.
- Focus on the employer’s problems and not your own. Employers want to see someone who is a problem solver. Think critically about the company and the specific position. Share the ways that you can make a positive contribution to the organization. If you can, find out the reasons the position is open and tailor some of your answers around that. For instance, if the position is open due to a person leaving the company let the interviewer know that you are looking for a career oriented and long term position. Do as much research about the company as you can before the interview to calm any anxiety you have about what they do.
- Be polite and respectful to everyone you meet along the way. Don’t forget, the interviewer is not the only person you will interact with at the company. You may speak with the receptionist or administrative assistant. They will have some input on the hiring decision as well. For instance, if you are short or rude to the front desk receptionist they will tell this to the hiring manager. Treat everyone with respect and the company will see that you are a team player. Before going into the office, take a few deep breaths and make sure you are calm and confident.
