Everyone knows that LinkedIn is an essential tool for modern professional networking, but how do you use it effectively? Rather than wading through hundreds of websites written about how to optimize your profile, consider employing these 5 simple tips today. This will kick start your LinkedIn page and polish your professional profile.
- Turn off automatic updates. From the dropdown menu next to your name select “Settings.” On the bottom of the settings page you’ll find a column titled Privacy Controls. In that section there will be a link that says to turn your activity broadcasts either off or on. When you check that link it will bring up a box with several options. If the selection to “Let people know when you change your profile, make recommendations, or follow companies,” is checked, unselect it. When you’re completely done updating your profile you can go back and check it so future updates are broadcasted.
- Endorse your connections. You’ve probably received an email that informs you that one of your connections has endorsed you for your skills. Return the favor by endorsing your connections. Build a habit once a week to endorse 5 to 10 people in your network. This reciprocal relationship will build connections.
- Get recommendations. Recommendations work much like references. Any future employer can see who has worked with you before and what they thought about your performance. There are two ways to seek recommendations; you can ask people directly or you can recommend someone first. If you write a recommendation it will automatically suggest that the recipient return the favor and it is very effective.
- Photo tips. There is some controversy about the LinkedIn photo option. Some people don’t prefer to have a photo of them on the site but LinkedIn requires it for a complete profile. Make sure your photo is up to date so you are recognizable at networking events. Always use a photo of yourself rather than a building, object, or animal. Smile, wear a color that compliments you, and don’t include other people in your picture.
- Use your headline. Your default headline is the title of your current position but you can change that. Write one sentence that communicates who you are and what you do. You can even break up the sentence using a vertical spacer or “|” to give it more visual appeal.
