Are you looking for your next management position? If so, you may want to consider some of the things that businesses are seeking when it comes to good managers to add to their teams. Here are four things you should know so you can arrive to the interview armed with the right answers and the right questions.

  1. They always hire for excellence. Of course a company wouldn’t hire an average manager so you would never dream of presenting yourself as an average candidate. What they really mean by this is that they want to see results. Managers with a history of success can take even an average team and make them superstars. Be that superhero that can make that happen.
  2. They are looking for clarity in the role. Many companies are required to create job descriptions to have on file for human resources in order to remain compliant. Often these documents are a laundry list of duties and tasks which can be boring to read. Management is one of the most difficult roles to define. If you can bring in your own experience to the table and tell them how they can fit your skills into their definition they will be able to take a step back and see what their management roles have always been missing.
  3. They want leaders. Sometimes when a top performing employee is moved into a management job they fail in the role. This is because leadership is part of a set of skills that can take quite some time to develop. If someone hasn’t done it before it may take more time than the company has the luxury of to produce. Show them that you have leadership skills and experience.
  4. They want life-long learners. Just because you have leadership skills doesn’t mean there isn’t more that you can learn. Be someone they want to develop within their company. They may not even realize that you could use additional training so tell them that you want to learn as much as you can about the company, the team, and everything involved.
