Sometimes it seems there aren’t enough hours in a day.  Between the job, household chores, the kids, and other obligations, we often wonder how we can ever keep up.

People feel stretched to the limit, wondering how they will ever be able to take care of the things that really matter.  But there are people who can do it, according to business analyst Tony Schwartz

These people don’t have some secret energy drink or even more will power or discipline than others. In fact, they might very possibly be using less energy than most.  They’ve made the important things almost automatic, so that they require less energy.

We all have a certain amount of willpower.  But research has shown that we use it up as we do things that require the conscious use of our will or discipline.  So, for example, if you exert yourself to stay away from that piece of apple pie, you have less energy left over for some other activity.  Our willpower subsides as the day wears on.  Making choices uses the same reservoir of willpower that we use for other acts of self-control.

So, to get stuff done, researchers have helped people develop rituals, that is, very particular acts that are done at certain times each day.  By doing this, these actions become automatic, and the person doing them doesn’t need to consciously use his or her willpower or self-discipline.

It is somewhat like great athletes, who have practiced their sport so often that they no longer have to think about what they are doing.  It all comes naturally.

Examples of rituals could be: going to bed at a specific time each night to make sure you get enough rest, working out every day as soon as you wake up, deciding the night before what will be the first thing you will tackle at work the next morning, or writing down at once any idea or task that pops into your mind during the day.

A ritual really is a mark of your determination to get things done.  Once you have decided on your ritual and have started doing it, it takes on a life of its own, according to Schwartz.
