It can be hard to keep your team motivated in the summer months when they would rather be anywhere but cooped up in the office. However, work doesn’t slow down just because the days have gotten longer and the beach is calling everyone’s names. Here are some tips for keeping your staff engaged this summer.

  • Flexible work schedule. Summer is a perfect time to reevaluate your work hours. While you may not be able to allow everyone the option to work from home there are a few things you can try to engage your team. Provide flexible start and end times so parents can take their kids to summer activities. Offer them the ability to work 4 10-hour days and have one day off a week.
  • Plan for vacations. All of your employees will want to take time off to spend a week or so with their families while school is out. Make sure that vacations don’t leave big holes in your production and if you need additional help when someone is out of the office consider hiring a temporary employee to fill in.
  • Host a summer barbeque or picnic. Social activities in the summer are a great way to recharge your employees. Host a weekend event or just a day at the park with your team and their families. You can plan team building activities but not too many so everyone has a chance to socialize outside of the office.
  • Get outside. Speaking of outside, allow your staff to take advantage of the gorgeous summer weather by providing a space for them to eat lunch outdoors. Organize a lunchtime walking group or find other ways everyone can get outside the office to feel the sun on their faces.
  • Friday fun days. Motivation is especially difficult on Fridays during the summer. Make Fridays fun. Allow everyone the opportunity to dress casually in jeans on Fridays by raising money for charity. They can only wear jeans if they donate $2 a week to a group your team picks for the month. Have an ice cream social, a pizza party, or a happy hour at 4pm on Fridays to make getting through the day more fun.
