Are you a manager at your place of employment? That still makes you an employee. As an employee, do you want to fail at your job?

No? Well, neither do most employees.

To help your subordinates succeed at their jobs, it’s vital that you supply them with effective, regular feedback.

It’s unwise to hope a poorly performing employee will somehow start to improve on his or her own. This happens — but only sometimes. It’s also a very bad mistake to give negative feedback in public. It’s absolutely disastrous if you give negative feedback in public by yelling or otherwise demeaning an employee. This only causes anyone who witnesses this unprofessional and mean-spirited outburst to feel fear (“I could be next!”), and to — more than likely — just do the bare minimum of work (“So he won’t yell at ME”) and then hightail it from your employ at the next opportunity

The best way to give regular feedback — and to give the kind of feedback that helps employees give their best efforts — is to praise an employee publicly when you see him or her doing something well.

This helps your employees know that they are doing a good job, because you’re telling them they are. It takes the guess work out of figuring out what you want them to do.

Praise your employees verbally when they’re doing well and when it’s necessary to offer a critique, take them aside and deliver the news privately. Offer ideas as to how to fix the problem. You also may want and need to listen to the employee explain the reason for the poor performance (trouble at home, etc.).

You shouldn’t wait to supply positive or negative feedback. Letting poor performance or other on-the-job issues go without comment makes it all the harder for you to do so when the poor performance becomes egregious.
