Most employees have certain aspirations within their office environment, many of which are centered on moving up in the workplace hierarchy. Promotions are the cornerstone of an employee’s performance and are the driving force behind attempts to do well in every aspect of their job.

In most instances, landing a promotion takes time, but there are some steps you can take to speed up the process.

For starters, go above and beyond in every task you do. This is the easiest way to get noticed and will ensure that you are being promoted on your merits and not because of office politics. Take on challenging projects and get them done in a timely and efficient manner. Project confidence in your work and have a good attitude at all times. You must be the picture of professionalism in order for others in the office to see you in a positive light. This is an important part of your reputation in the workplace.

Once you are consistently doing good work, it’s time to get the attention of the higher ups. This might be something as simple as asking a partner or senior staff member out to a friendly lunch. To start, get to know each other better, chatting about small things and then you can bend his or her to find out what goals and challenges their department faces. If you can help them meet their goals, you’re well on your way to a promotion.

Speak up in meetings, particularly all-staff meetings when senior staff is present. Make yourself available to attend company meetings and functions when possible. Not only is this an opportunity to talk about your work, but it also showcases your dedication to the company.

However, it is important to be confident and direct, but not pushy. A formal dinner is not the time to talk work; however, establishing a rapport with a senior staff member at that dinner might give you an opening in the office to chat; an opening you might not have had before.  Understanding timing and when to make an approach to a senior staff member is key and is individual to each company.

Also, ask about promotional opportunities in your annual performance review. Set goals and talk with your supervisor about them, and together, you can set a time line to work towards the promotion you want.
