Interviews are entirely subjective. How do you really know the way a candidate will handle themselves in the office environment once they are hired? Since you can’t give everyone an opportunity to prove themselves there has to be some deciding factor leading up to your choice. The best assessments companies have at their disposal right now are still traditional interview questions. The best interview questions will dig down to four core traits that can match a candidate to your office environment; how they identify and solve problems, how they anticipate the future, how they adapt and learn, and how you can better understand them as individuals. Here are 10 interview questions that will help you analyze candidates.

  1. How do you identify problems? Every open position is a problem that needs to be solved. The best candidates know that they are the solution and can explain why.
  2. Are you able to see possible flaws in processes? A candidate who blindly follows procedures is not as valuable as one who can improve them.
  3. How would you solve a specific problem? A behavioral interview question is designed to assess the candidate’s response to a specific scenario that frequently occurs in your workplace.
  4. Where do you see this job in five to ten years? Everyone has a career path. If they don’t know what they want to do in the next decade this may be a red flag.
  5. How do you continue to grow and learn in your career? Everyone has a different learning style. Is theirs consistent with the growth opportunities within your company?
  6. How adaptable are you when your routine is challenged? Adaptability is key for most positions. If someone is easily upset by change they may not be able to handle the opportunity long term.
  7. How can you innovate? You want to add a member of your team who can take your business to the next level. No matter what that role is it may require some creative and innovative thinking.
  8. What is your ideal job? Everyone has specifics that they want to get out of a career. Does their vision match your company?
  9. What motivates you? It is best to know up front the ways in which your new employee will stay engaged and motivated on the job. It is also important to know if this is something that will work for you.
  10. How do you feel you are most effectively managed? You also need to ensure that your new employee works well with the management team currently in place.
